Fix super high scaling problem in Photoshop for Windows 10

Display scaling has always been an issue in Windows. Most of the times its not the OS but the Application itself that is at fault. One might ask, in 2017, why the OS is not smart enough to solve these issues. And then there might be some, who don't even think it's an issue.

While the problem has existed for forever now, the native way in which windows works does not allow things to change. With the arrival of densely pixel-packed crisp displays, its soon gonna be everybody's problem. Therefore, until the solution comes in some form from the geeks at Microsoft, it shouldn't hurt to equip oneself with knowledge on this quick workaround.

tl;dr : Skipping the jibber jabber, here are the promised 3 steps:

STEP-1: Realize the problem

  1. Apply this fix ONLY if you have a scaling problem.
  2. Open Adobe Photoshop in maximized Window.
  3. You have a scaling problem if:
    - some part of the window is out of your screen, you have a problem
    - everything you see is very tiny!
  4. IMPORTANT! Close any open instances of Adobe Photoshop before you continue any further!

STEP-2: Change Registry

  1. Open Registry-editor
    - Hit Windows-key + R to open Run
    - Type "regedit" and hit Enter
  2. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > SideBySide
  3. Once you reach there, right-click on "SideBySide" and select NEW > DWORD (32bit) Value
  4. Type the name as "PreferExternalManifest" and hit Enter to confirm
  5. Right-click PreferExternalManifest value and click Modify
  6. Change the Data to 1 and  select Decimal
  7. Click OK to secure Registry Entry
  8. Exit Registry Editor

STEP-3: Create a Manifest file

  1. Download the manifest file
  2. Copy manifest file to the folder where Adobe Photoshop is installed. You can know this by looking for Photoshop.exe file that should be present on the required folder.
  3. Rename the manifest file from manifest.xml to photoshop.exe.manifest
  4. Thats it! Presto! The next time you open Photoshop, everything should be fixed!
